Basic Broom Making Class @ The Whatcom Museum
Learn all about hand brooms in Basic Hand Broom Making. Participants will learn skills to make turkey tail broom, hawk tail broom as well as pot scrubbers. Class will also cover broom anatomy, lore, history, a demo and hands-on broom making time. Supplies for two brooms are included in class fee. Physical abilities needed: grasping, holding, turning/rotating, maintaining tension between a stick under feet and a broom in hands. Broom making supplies and finished brooms will be available for purchase.
Textile artist Becka/ Bex Viets stumbled upon broom making and never looked back. The art of making brooms felt intuitive from the start. Unwilling to leave her textile practice behind she balances both trades with skill and precision at Hexagon Textile.

One day broom intensive
Saturday August 24, 2024. 11:30am-6pm Chuckanut Center, Bellingham, WA.
Join Becka Viets of Hexagon Textile & Broom for a full day broom intensive. From hand brooms to weaving broom corn this class will cover it all. We will learn about broom history and lore, make hand brooms and handled brooms. Plus learn weaving broomcorn and finishing. We will break mid afternoon for snacks. This will be a physically intensive day of broom making. Good grip strength and hand eye coordination are required. Limited to 6 students. All broom supplies, snacks and beverages are included. $333 each. Contact me via email with any diet restrictions. Please review cancelation policy. Saturday July 27, 1pm-3:30pm Chuckanut Center, Bellingham, WA Join textile artist Becka Viets of Hexagon Textile & Broom for this family friendly class (ages 7+). 2.5 hours $75/adult, $55/under 12. Each Student will receive two organic cotton bandanas to cover with flowers or dye ingredients. From blank to bold we will work through the process of bundle dyeing and steaming to finish. From Onion skins to Cochineal bugs, we will discuss the different plants and bug that can create color, how to prepare fibers for natural dyeing and more. Link to register:
